SAHARA – An Oldies Initiative
Sahara is a term used for support. Many elders who have limited resources or lack a support system may find themselves in a destitute situation. They may struggle to access basic needs such as food, shelter, and healthcare. In such situations, it is essential to support these elders to ensure their well-being. So as a Sahara, we at The Millennium India Foundation strive to fulfill their requirements by livelihood support and companionship program.
- 37.4% of people aged above 65 years Die due to a lack of care and medical facilities
- 38% of elderly people have been Abandoned by their families
- 21.9% of elderly people suffer from Depression
- 40% of older people regularly experience Loneliness
SUSTAINING KITS AND MEDICAL KITS
Sustaining and medical kits are essential for elderly people to ensure that they have the necessary supplies and medications to maintain their health and well-being. A sustaining kit may include non-perishable food items and basic hygiene supplies such as hand sanitiser and soap. A medical kit, on the other hand, includes necessary medications and medical supplies such as blood pressure monitors, blood sugar testing kits, and wound care materials. It’s crucial for caregivers to regularly check their health and provide the required medicines in their daily lives.
LIVELIHOOD SUPPORT
Livelihood support for elderly people is essential for ensuring their financial independence and well-being. As people age, they may experience a decline in physical and cognitive abilities that can limit their ability to work and earn a living. In many cases, elderly people may be reliant on social security or other forms of government assistance to make ends meet. With UJALA, we strive to provide a source of income like making bulbs, handmade crafts, etc.
ADOPTION
Adopting an elderly person means providing them with a loving and caring home, where they can feel safe and supported. It means giving them a sense of belonging and purpose in their later years. Under this program we rescue the elderly people uprooted by various reasons, providing them with food, and shelter, and if anyone wants to get involved in some small work under the UJALA campaign, monetary support is also given.
COMPANIONSHIP
Companionship can provide emotional support, reduce loneliness and depression, and improve overall well-being. It involves engaging in meaningful conversations, sharing experiences and memories, and helping with daily tasks. Companionship also promotes physical and mental well-being by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. Older adults need to have companionship to maintain their quality of life and enjoy their golden years. Our volunteers spend their spare time with these seniors, providing emotional support and engaging activities. With UJALA, we strive to provide a source of income for elderly individuals, such as making bulbs, handmade crafts, etc.
